The fire observation watchtower
The fire observation watchtower Kostroma Reviews
Weird... Aug 10, 2007
In 1773, Kostroma was devastated by a great fire. Afterwards the city was rebuilt with streets radiating from a single focal point near the river. They say that Empress Catherine dropped her fan on the city map, and told the architects to follow her design. Kostroma became one of the best preserved examples of the 18th century town planning, with some elegant structures in a "provincial neoclassical" style. Most eye-catching result of this destructive fire is the fire observation watchtower. It looks just like a light house, but instead of it being near an ocean, harbor or at least a big lake, it is at the edge of the central square of town.
