The castles of Bellinzona Reviews
A geat testimony of medieval fortifications. Jan 20, 2011
The three castles of Bellinzona are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site consists of the three castles Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello and Castello di Sasso Corbaro. The strategic position, which was used to control the most important Alpine connected with northern Italy, determined the foundation of Bellinzona.
Well, actually I visited only the biggest castle, Castegrande. From there I could see the other two, which looked a little less interesting.
In the fifteenth century, the House of Visconti (the family that ruled on Milan) built Castelgrande with the intention of creating a massive military barrage in the valley, making Bellinzona to a wide frontier fortress. The three castles are the most significant testimony of medieval fortifications in the Alps.
