A solemn procession with free oranges Feb 24, 2009
The finale of the carnival at Binche is on Shrove Tuesday, starting at around 4pm and lasting for nearly two hours. It is a simple train ride to and from Binche if you are anywhere in Belgium, although the trains leaving straight after the parade will be packed.

The parade is World Heritage listed as a masterpiece of human cultural history, with ornate festivals and rituals beforehand, but on the day you will just see oddly shuffling jesters throwing out oranges to the crowd. The pleasure comes from the excitement of the crowd and the surge to catch some of the tens of thousands of blood oranges (good tasty ones, too) that are thrown out, often with considerable force.
