An American style restaurant in the Amazon - The Yellow Rose of Texas Nov 24, 2009
It's impossible not to find this place, which is just located a few meters from the Main Square. This American style restaurant is open 24 / 7 offering a really wide menu, which includes local, Mexican, American, Tex Mex dishes and also a special diet for the indigenous Ayahuasca ceremony.

First thing that will capture your attention is the fact that the waiters and waitresses are wearing the University of Austin Cheerleaders uniforms, hahaha. Then you'll find yourself surrounded by a cool decoration, which remembers you to a sports bar / restaurant in the USA.

The owner came from TX a while ago and decided to open a restaurant than reminded him home. The result is awesome! A restaurant that has a bit of the Amazon but also from Texas! You can see this interesting combination not only in the decor and furniture, but also in the wide menu offering juanes (local dish) next to NOLA gumbo, great!

The menu offers different alternatives for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack. It's very wide - a book actually - written in Spanish and also in English. Prices are not high, but maybe food is a bit more expensive than other local restaurants, although it's still cheap.

We came here for breakfast and tried the regional one - which was about local ham, plantain, toasts, coffee and juice - and the vegetarian one - fruit salad, juice, yogurt. Both of them very tasty, good size portions.

This place is always crowded by foreigners but also locals. Locals are looking for an American style and foreigners want something from the rainforest, but not too weird. It's a great transition stage.

The owner is really cool and likes to hang out with the customers. Definitely I recommend this place is you are in Iquitos. They also have a sports bar next door. I'll write a review about it too.

It's always conflicting to go to this type of place when you are traveling since it is not a "local" or "traditional" place, but this one is a great exception! The place has a great vibe, the owner hit it on the mark!
Food and service was good too, I think if I spent more time in Iquitos I would go back to try some of the gumbo or Mexican just to see how it is prepared.

I really liked this place-- good food, convenient location, helpful patrons, friendly service and booze. Apparently, it serves American food, but my eye went straight to the list of specials on the wall, where they list a plethora of yummy local foods, including fresh fish and even alligator.

Although it's kinda *the* gringo bar, Iquitos is off the map enough so that nothing gets really touristy (No white dudes picking up on local chicks like in Cusco or Aguas Caliente). It's rep makes it a good place to go to get information, as you're likely to find English speakers hanging out there. We met some very helpful locals, including a guy that used to run jungle tours and an expat that published a local newspaper.

The gator I had here (the filet, not the nuggets) was sooooo much better than in the Everglades. And it was dirt cheap.

Banana pancakes were the best I ever had. And I'm fussy.

So was the gator better here due to the quality of the meat or the way it was prepared? Perhaps they used a 'croc' pot???
