The Winds Cafe and Bakery Yellow Springs Reviews
Blown away by these meals... Jan 18, 2013
Yellow Springs is a very hip college town outside of Dayton, Ohio. If you are in the neighborhood it presents a pleasant setting to relax for a day, enjoying artisan shops and perhaps catch a theater performance. But if you are hungry, I strongly suggest the Winds Café and Bakery.
There are plentiful restaurant choices in the heart of this village, but the Winds has been around as long as anyone (since 1977) for good reason. The menu changes constantly with the seasons and as you might expect, dwells upon organic ingredients. I’ve enjoyed the Winds a half dozen times across twelve years and relished every visit. The cuisine is European at heart, but ranges across the globe and usually has an American twist (strong New Orleans influence) in preparation.
Last week I met an old friend there (in January) and warmed my soul back up with a lovely cup of chipotle sweet potato chowder…yum! My entrée of Moroccan Meatballs followed quickly and was superbly spicy, just the right amount of heat to accent the tasty beef. Although I’ve never sampled their desserts, the finish usually garners the highest accolades.
The interior is quite funky – old and wooden with random walls to make it feel like you are sitting outdoors, modern art splashed everywhere. Although I suspect there might be some snob appeal (always seems to be frequented by college professors - of course my friend is pursuing a doctorate), the service is tremendously friendly and casual, preventing any pretense despite the lofty crowd. I’ve been here at odd times and the Winds always seems busy, perhaps due to the magnificent wine cellar they maintain, but probably because it is just a happening joint.
The Winds seems to be an institution in Yellow Springs, so I can only urge you to drop in should be fortunate enough to spend time in this charming Ohio college town.
