The Wells Hampstead Reviews
Great Gastropub, shame about the staff! May 06, 2012
After a bit of a cultural exploration around Hampstead we headed of to fill our grumbling stomaches with some hearty gastropub delights.
The place was quite busy, as you'd expect on a Sunday and given it's proximity to the heath. Initially we were told we would have to wait half an hour for a table, only then to be pleasantly surprised to be seated almost instantly after we made out to leave.
There was a good atmosphere in the pub and we noticed that pets and children were both welcome. The menu isn't vast but the choices are varied and the prices reasonable. We skipped starters and headed straight to main courses of a beef sunday dinner, beef burger and steak and were not disappointed by the portion sizes or quality of the food, although I would have preferred if mine had been a little warmer.
All of the meals came with sides of either veg or chips and a salad, surprisingly though after all of that food we still managed to make room for deserts. Again the portion sizes weren't to be sniffed at and we all polished off our deserts with gusto.
The drinks menu is also pretty extensive with a good selection of wines both by the glass and by the bottle, as well as cocktails (both alcoholic and non) and single malt scotch on offer.
My only main gripe with the place was that some of the staff were surly, bordering on rude, to the point where we were tempted not to leave a tip. However we decided against that strategy as other people who had served us had been pretty friendly so didn't want to tar all of the staff with the same brush.
Sadly things like that leave a bad taste in your mouth (pardon the pun!) so despite the good food I'm not sure if I'd rush back in a hurry!
