The Weigh Inn Hotel Thurso Reviews
The hotel at the end of the mainland Jun 01, 2013
We stayed here since driving along the coast to Thurso from the west this is sort of the first major hotel you encounter - and it was getting a bit late in the day hence it seemed obvious to drop by and check the place out.
The hotel is located at the main highway along the coast and not far from the ferry to the islands to the north. The hotel is almost at the waterline but for some reason they have decided not to build the hotel at the coast - instead they have decided the sheep’s would have the field at the waterside and the hotel would have to be withdrawn from the water.
Some of the rooms in the main building of the hotel got a view of the water. But we stayed in the somewhat cheaper modern annex section of the hotel which has no view of the water. There are quite a few rooms in this section of the hotel and in general the hotel is bigger than it appears at first sight. The look from the outside of the annex isn’t all that inspiriting though. On the other hand there are plenty of parking spaces just in front of the rooms so it is pretty convenient for parking you car if you come in a car - and let’s face it public transport to this part of Scotland isn’t that plentiful so you will most likely get here in a car.
The rooms aren’t very big but they got what you need in the form of a couple of beds, a small desk with a couple of chairs in front. There are also a coffee and a tea maker so you can get cup of tea or coffee if the cold climate at the north coast of Scotland gets to you during the day or night. The shower is a bit on the small side but there is what you need and sufficient clean towels.
There is a heater in the room which is working. And with the temperatures in this part of Scotland you really appreciate the heater. The receptionist might appreciate the fact that the temperature has dropped from an exceptional high temperature of 20 Celsius in the previous days to a still unusual hot 13 degrees - but the rest of us probably will find it a bit on the chilly side and stay close to the heater.
There is a pub style restaurant at the hotel where they serve some decent classic pub food. While you sit at the restaurant it is possible to catch a glimpse of the sun setting outside shining a late light on the cliffs on the Orkney Islands.
The breakfast in the morning is included in the room rate so you can just go from the annex to the breakfast area of the hotel - in principal there are some outdoor serving areas - but with the usual temperatures here at the north coast of Scotland you will probably prefer sitting inside and just look out of the window. We sit just at the window and have a traditional Scottish breakfast which is pretty similar to a British breakfast except for the addition of haggish on the plate.
