Short walk May 05, 2008
A short hop, skip and jump from the ferry terminal - don't be lazy getting the free-transfer or a cab. Greeted by very friendly staff and got a double room with a TV.
Room was pretty good, though glad it wasn't any colder as the heater didn't work. They have apple crumble and custard for free during the Winter period. They also get some free bread from the local Dutch bakery, but you'll have to be up early before it gets eaten! Laundry and internet access ($2 for 30 mins I think). They have extensive knowledge of the Queen Charlotte Track (hiking), and will arrange bookings etc. Part of the Fiji, New Zealand and Australia travel blog |

The best hostel I've stayed in Feb 08, 2008
i love the Villa! definitely one of the best hostels I've stayed in!
It kind of looks moe like a b&b than a backpackers, at least from the outside, but it's definitely a backpackers. It's a fairly quiet place, several lounges, some with fireplaces, and a nice kitchen. The bathrooms are currently under construction, it seems like they're putting in tiles in one stall at the time, so there's a fair bit of tile-dust around at the moment, but the overall cleanliness was better than any of the places i've stayed so far. out back they have a big garden, with tables, chairs, flowers and lights, a fireplace and a spa pool! since the garden is such a great hangout place for people wanting a beer or six, the rooms and other common areas stay fairly quiet, so you can choose whether to partake in the action or not. the staff seemed friendly.
