Low budget eco lodge Jan 17, 2003
In the eco-lodge crazy area of the Cayo district The Trek Stop has found a niche: an eco-lodge catering for the budget traveller.
For less than $30 you hire a basic cabin in a beautiful setting, where squirrels, butterflies, birds and other critters come visit you in the morning. Amenities are basic but complete, including gravity powered/solar heated showers and a composting dump toilet. The staff is extremely friendly and organises day and night walks in the surroundings. Several excursions in the area, like tubing on the Río Mopan, can also be arranged from the Trek Stop. The place also boasts a little wildlife museum and a butterfly garden. The lodge is located 12 kilometres outside San Ignacio, opposite the entrance to the ruins of Xunantunich. Highly recommended!! Part of the Central America 2002-2003 travel blog |

At $28/night for a private cabin with shared bath you can't beat the price. The Trek Stop is right on the Western Highway, approx 6 miles west of San Ignacio heading for the Guatemalan border. Literally right down the road from Xunantunich, a must see Mayan ruin. There is a restaurant on the premises as well as a kitchen where you cook store and cook your own food if you want to do that. All purchases while you are a guest whether from the gift shop or at the restaurant operate on the tab honor system where you square your account at the end of your stay. There is a small gift shop and free internet access. Also free admission to the butterfly sanctuary and free use of the disc golf course. Cheap inner tube rentals with a ride to and from the river as well. John and Judy- the owners- are wonderful people with a heart for the Belize natives and can provide you with great recommendations on tours and things to do in the area.
Pros: rooms are clean and comfortable cheap! restaurant kitchen free internet access helpful tour planning hammocks butterfly garden beautiful grounds Cons: composting toilets aka outhouses Part of the Belize Getaway 2008 travel blog |
