The Toy Train from Coonoor to Ooty
The Toy Train from Coonoor to Ooty Reviews
One of the oldest mountain railways in India Sep 23, 2008
Coonoor is located at the beautiful Nilgiris Hill district, at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level. At Coonoor is a small train station from where several steam- and diesel trains run through the region. This Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. It was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2005. At the station of Coonoor you can see many active steam trains.
The steam trains only run to lower areas, since they are not capable to make the steep gradient towards Ooty. For this route a small diesel train is used, also referred to as ‘The Toy Train’. The trip to Ooty is about 19 kilometers and runs through beautiful lush landscape.
Do keep in mind you’ll probably need a sweater in this area. Because of the altitude it’s not as hot here as it is in the rest of India.
