Leuven's town center worth seeing Jun 25, 2011
Leuven's town center is really charming. The town hall, said to be the most beautiful one in Belgium, is adorned with Bible stories from medieval times as well as local heroes from later centuries. As the town hall was hit by a bomb during the first (or was it the second?) world war, most of the facade has had to be restored. Many of the original statues can still be found in the town hall's attick. Tours are available.

The town hall of Leuven is build in 1439. There have been several other halls before the one that can be viewed now. You find this masterpiece of architecture on the Grand Place, in the center of the city.

The Town hall is constructed in a Gothic style, with four towers (one on each corner), two other towers on top of the roof, and many decorations on the facade. These statues represent stories from out of the bible, using only images so everyone, both the judges from in the hall - as the common people, could understand their meaning. Sin and punishment are the main themes in the tales. But also famous people from ancient Leuven are represented.

Our town hall has been damaged severely during the second world war, but has been rebuilt into its original state.

The building is beautiful just viewed from the outside. If you want to visit the rooms within you can do so by taking a guided tour. From April to September they leave each day (no weekends) at 11am and 3pm. During the weekends there is only one tour at 3pm.

One can visit only the town hall for the price of 2 euro's. A combined ticket that includes the treasury of Saint Peter (the church), the town hall, and a short walk through the city, costs 5 euro's.

Almost unbelievable Sep 08, 2003
I see that Kim has written a review of this amazing building that is the town hall of her home town. I came to Leuven for one night as a foreigner and had no idea what I was about to see. We have no shortage of fine town hall buildings in the north of England but this is something else.

Its history is interesting. it is essentially a fifteenth century building, when it was built to a very distinctive pattern with three small towers at each gable end. Plentiful bases were made for statues, mant with elaborately carved with reliefs from the Bible. However the statues themselves were not put in place until the nineteenth century. Apparently there are no less than 236 of them!

Substantial damage during the war has been repaired so that the building appears as it was, perhaps the most elaborately ornate of any in Europe.
