The Town Hall Reviews
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul 04, 2007
The town hall of Leuven is build in 1439. There have been several other halls before the one that can be viewed now. You find this masterpiece of architecture on the Grand Place, in the center of the city.
The Town hall is constructed in a Gothic style, with four towers (one on each corner), two other towers on top of the roof, and many decorations on the facade. These statues represent stories from out of the bible, using only images so everyone, both the judges from in the hall - as the common people, could understand their meaning. Sin and punishment are the main themes in the tales. But also famous people from ancient Leuven are represented. Our town hall has been damaged severely during the second world war, but has been rebuilt into its original state. The building is beautiful just viewed from the outside. If you want to visit the rooms within you can do so by taking a guided tour. From April to September they leave each day (no weekends) at 11am and 3pm. During the weekends there is only one tour at 3pm. One can visit only the town hall for the price of 2 euro's. A combined ticket that includes the treasury of Saint Peter (the church), the town hall, and a short walk through the city, costs 5 euro's.
