Iconic century-old cafe on the traveller circuit Jul 13, 2013
The Thorn Tree Cafe is truly a must for travellers and those enamoured of travelling nostalgia - think of Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree forum, and you get the idea. This is an iconic place which has its origins in a tree in the 1900s that travellers pinned messages to - a sort of Travbuddy a century ago :) - and the cafe came up around travellers, backpackers and safari-goers of yore who connected up through messages on this tree, which also served as Nairobi's first post-office of sorts. The current tree, of course, is not a century old - in the original's place is a third generation tree now - but the place is, and this cafe is still said to be "the most famous meeting place in East Africa". The cafe itself is fantastic too, even if a tad expensive, with fabulous snacks and meals, great cocktails and drinks, and amazing teas and coffees. It is located in the New Stanley Hotel, a classic in its own right and a nice central place to stay. If you ask one of the reception staff, they might give you photocopies of some documents about the history and importance of the place.
