The Sunshine Skyway Bridge Reviews
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Beautiful bridge Apr 28, 2007
The Sunshine Skyway is a toll bridge that spans Tampa Bay in Florida, connecting Terra Ciea to the south and St. Petersburg to the north. Apparently this is the longest "cable-stayed main span" bridge in the world. The length of the bridge is 5.5 miles (aprox 8.9 KM) with a vertical clearance of 193 feet (58.8 m). Opened to traffic in April 1987, this is actually the second “Sunshine Skyway” after disaster struck the first (well, a ship struck the first, in a fog storm). Many new safety precautions have been taken to make the previous accident not happen for this bridge (not the least of which is that the span has been widened tremendously). Remnants of the first bridge are visible as fishing piers along the side of the current one.
This is a rather impressive bridge, and with a toll of only $1, it's really not that expensive. If you're in the Tampa area, take a drive over the Sunshine Skyway. Part of the Florida - April, 2007 travel blog
