The Story of Berlin Travel Reviews

Dec 20, 2007
This museum tempted us as we went to Berlin without much in the way of knowledge about Berlin as a city. We found it in one of those flyers in the front of a hotel.

It was a little hard to find because their map was confusing but we finally found it and walked inside. There is this big plane wing on the outside and then you walk down a hall way. I don't remember the price off hand but it is definitely reasonable. You hand off your coats and get a ticket and walk inside.

Theres a front room where they have a piece of the Berlin Wall and an old car. You can watch some short films and look at pictures through time. The real fun is when you walk through the ticketed gates and head into the museum. You first head up these stairs which is made to look like you are walking up flights up stairs surrounded by apartments from earlier times, then you pop out in the main part.

There are many different rooms and each one is based on a different theme. One room was based on religion. It showed the religious history if Berlin. It had these drawers that you could open that showed the comparison of three religions. It was the most interesting thing.
Continuing down the hallway continues you through time. There is a tiny movie theater where you can stop for a few minutes and watch an old time show. Theres a boxing ring area to show the history of that sport.

When you are ready you head downstairs. The stairs are lined with pictures of famous Berlin people. Once you get to the lower level you are standing on books. The hallway shows books to show you the books that were burned during Hitlers era. Also a poster shows Hitler and his handwriting explaining that as he got older and more crazy his handwriting deteriorated. His suicide note was illegible.

This room shows the life of communism. This is not a holocaust museum and it does not go into that factor of history.

Finally you are popped out into a gift shop where you have the option of purchasing all of Berlin's finest stuff. If you can find it there is nuclear fallout bunker. (we missed it somehow).

This museum was very well put together. bring your reading glasses as there is so much information and it is put together in such a good format. You can definitely walk through history in one afternoon there and walk you should.
