Going to Church... Nov 21, 2012
Visited this hip venue with a couple co-workers during the latest business trip. Located in Newport, Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, the Southgate House Revival is a splendid place to catch independent performers. Our objective was to enjoy an evening with James McMurty, and we were not disappointed.

The Southgate House Revival was formerly located in nearby Covington, but relocated in the fall of 2012 to the Grace Method Episcopal Church in Newport’s historic district. A beautiful building, the church was raised way back in 1848 and features about a dozen stained glass windows. The religious scenes depicted in the windows are quite nice, and as you might suspect, a church typically is constructed with acoustics in mind. Noting baffles added to the ceiling, we were initially disappointed with sound quality, but after a few gestures from the band to the sound man, it became apparent the sound was primo if mixed properly.

A bar rests below a splendid pipe organ at the back of the church, so you don’t have to religiously observe the musicians you came to enjoy (and speaking from experience, they had a diverse and lovely selection of bottled beer). We were astonished to learn there was a small stage downstairs as well, and parking is free and convenient – there are a few spaces right on the grounds, which I suspect was no charge, because we rolled down our windows to ask if it was okay to park at the lot of a business across the street and the parking attendant quickly smiled and gave thumbs up.

Check ‘em out if you are hanging by Cincinnati and looking for good tunes!
