Smile Motel Dec 28, 2012
Smile Motel is a small motel located on the main street between the Shwesandaw Paya and the square with the statue of General Aung San. Hence this is pretty much as central a location as you can get in Pyay. To be fair Pyay is a pretty small city so most places will have a fairly central location in this small town. The motel got around 20 rooms of which most is the same and then they got two bigger rooms which are called family room. I didn’t actually see these rooms so I don’t know what they look like and whether or not they are worth the extra cost.
All the rooms got a couple of beds in a pretty small but they got most of the essential things you will need. There is an old television which might work - I can’t remember if we used it so I am not sure if it worked. There is also a refrigerator and air condition. The bath room is small and a bit worn down but at least there is water in the tap. And one great thing about the water in the shower is there is actually warm water - Wuhu warm water what a luxury for a small hotel in a tiny city on the Myanmar country side.
The rooms are all located along a very long corridor on the first floor which doesn’t look all that appealing. At the one end of this corridor just next to the stair is a little dedicated breakfast area where you can get a small breakfast in the morning. You just tell what time you want it and then it will be ready about the time you actually ordered it for so you got a bit of eggs to start the day with.
The staff at the hotel is pretty friendly and helpful they help us book ticket for a bus for a small fee off 400 kyats - or about 50 us cents. They were also helpful in trying to make reservation at a hotel in another city. Unfortunately they didn’t speak all that much English so I had problem understanding what they said about the next hotel. After a while we figured out that their English they used double negations so when they said this hotel hot water - have not. Basically meant no hot water at the hotel.
Even though this was a cheap hotel they still had a couple of bell boys who didn’t do much except opening the doors every time one of the guests got back to the hotel or they left to go out to explore the city. These bell boys were remarkable quick so you actually never got to open the door yourself. The biggest plus of the hotel was actually one of the bell boys who had just been working at the hotel for a while since he left school. He was a nineteen year kid and had a very positive attitude and was very helpful to us. He spoke better English than the staff at the reception and I guess he enjoyed practicing his English with the guest.

The Smile Hotel, Pyay - Myanmar
The Smile Hotel in Pyay did not leave us smiling but luckily
we were only there for one night. We
were shown two rooms, one bordering on disgusting and the second, more
expensive one, merely dirty and grimy and prison-esque. We did look elsewhere but the other hotel was
very expensive and so we ended up staying at the Smile. The staff were nice enough but the obsequious
manager who constantly smiled (maybe that is where they get the name) was
somewhat annoying. Our room had three
rock hard beds and looked somewhat like a prison cell and the bathroom (see the
picture in the blog entry of the plumbing) was scary. Breakfast even managed to suck here too –
cold eggs that had been pre prepared, Tang and bad coffee. Yumm!
Pyay is not the highlight of Burma by any means – get out
