The Small Isles
The Small Isles Mallaig Reviews
cheap mini cruise Aug 28, 2011
The Calmac ferry from Mallaig offers every Saturday an early or late non landing cruise of the small isles [Eigg/Muck/Rum &Canna]this is on the summer timetable, you can travel on week days but only to two of the islands. The Saturday cruise costs £16.50p this takes roughly 8 hours and you dock at all 4 isles ,in July and August basking shark and minke whale are often spotted during the cruise ,the cruise is best taken in good weather and you will get a rare view of the Scottish mainland ,the isle of Skye and the small isles. There is reasonably priced food and drink in the cafe ,good outside viewing areas [wrap up warm as even on a good sunny day the wind can be cold]the only bad bit is the inside lounge faces rearward so you can only see where you have been not where you are going, but please do not let this deter you as it is a very cheap and great day out
This ferry is a bit more expensive and only operates in summer but if you want to see the wildlife then this is the ferry for you they do not run to strict timetables and if whales are spotted then they will sail towards them and if they are late getting to thier destination then tough, beware if you are stuck with train times they have been known to get back after the last train
