over valued hotel Mar 04, 2011
It is known as one of the best hotel in seoul, but I think it's too over valued considering location and price. First, the facilities and layout/design need to be renovated soon. You need to pay more than 280$ per night but I don't know the big differnece with the 40& motel for the sense of design. Second, the location is not easy to access by public transportation.

One of the Elite Hotels in Seoul Mar 14, 2008
The Shilla Hotel in Seoul is a fantastic hotel. Certainly one of the top hotels in Seoul (although options for luxury are rather limited in the city). Prior to my arrival in Seoul I asked the concierge at the Shilla to arrange a trip with Hyundai Asan to Kaesong, North Korea. The women at the concierge were extremely helpful, they dealt with my visa, booked the tour and even translated all necessary information into English for me. This was great considering Korean tour groups are not designed to accommodate foreigners. The hotel staff was also very attentive. When I arrived, someone personally greeted me, helped me check in quickly and delivered my bags to my room. This kind of service, especially after a long flight, is always greatly appreciated. I had a room on the second highest floor (the top floor is reserved for a French restaurant), and the view was spectacular. Seoul at night is quite amazing, and in my opinion, much prettier than during the day. Regarding the room itself, it had a very comfortable bed, a nice bathroom (L'Occitane toiletries a plus) and was plenty large. My only complaint was it felt a bit out-dated (I've stayed at the Sofitel Seoul and that was extremely modern). Considering the hotel is owned by Samsung corporation, it's inexcusable that they did not have a flat screen TV. Some highlights of the hotel are: it has a first rate gym that is nicer than most health clubs in the city, fantastic buffet breakfast (if you're willing to shell out 19,000 won) and as I mentioned before the staff. The negatives are limited, but significant. This hotel will try and nickel and dime you for everything. You have to pay for internet, you have to pay to use the sauna and worst of all the hotel gives you a cell phone for personal use. The cell phone is convenient but a complete rip off, you are much better renting one from the airport when you arrive. The last issue people might have, is the hotel's location (it wasn't such a problem for me, but I'm young and walking up and down hills is no problem for me). It is on a hill and to get to and from the subway, you must walk up or down a steep set of stairs. Its also located in a relatively obscure location with not much to do around the hotel itself. That said, its on Line 3, which in my opinion, is the most convenient line in Seoul as it runs perpendicular to the Han River. Lastly, this hotel was not designed to accommodate foreigners. It was designed to accommodate Seoul's elite. That means the service and feel of the hotel, while extremely pleasant, will likely feel a bit off to most foreigners who visit. Overall, I had a great experience at this hotel and the pricing was very cheap. There are very limited options when it comes to top hotels in Seoul, and if you aren't willing to pay for the Park Hyatt this is the place to stay.
