An interesting stop one mile off of highway 1. Jun 04, 2011
The San Gregorio General Store

San Gregorio, California.

For those of you who like to check out random places just off the beaten path, the San Gregorio General Store is worth the stop.

The San Gregorio General Store has served the community of San Gregorio since 1889. The "town" of San Gregorio itself consists mostly of the general store with its attached post office and a few scattered older houses. Across the road from the store is a closed gas station, which likely hasn't pumped gas since the sixties. That's about it! What makes this general store worth the stop is its atmosphere and unique collection of "stuff." There is a bar with a good selection of beer, and old potbelly wood stove to heat the place. There's all kinds of things to buy; books, tee shirts, bumper stickers, post cards, wine, cast iron ware, funny hats, even red long-johns with the trap door butt! It's the most interesting collection of random stuff that you've likely ever seen under one small roof, and is a great place for those seeking souvenirs of local California.

On weekends there is also free live music (mostly Bluegrass bands). The store draws a very mixed crowd of people; locals, bikers, passers by, music goers, you name it.

I have taken people there many times, and all have enjoyed what the store has to offer.

The San Gregorio General Store is located near the coast in San Mateo County, between the small town of Pescadero to the south, and Half Moon Bay to the north.

Directions: From highway 1 (the coast highway) drive east on highway 84 for one mile. The store is located on the corner of highway 84 and Old Stage Road.

(Don't blink or you'll miss it!)
