The San Francisco Opera is a stately white-pillared building across from City Hall. The inside is decorated with exquisite carved walls and ceilings and lush drapery. It's no Vienna, but its a nice reason to get dressed up with your friends. Weeknight matinees are cheaper (as low as $15) and less formal. Be warned that the nosebleed section is so high up it gave my friend Marlinee vertigo. The stage lighting is also dramitically different from higher up, something that can really reduce the quality of a show. Large screens help you view the stage from the correct angle, as well as project translated subtitles. It is San Francisco, so sometimes the audience is a sight in itself, like that one dude dressed in a tophat and ascot.
