The Sage is often called the Armadillo because of its shape but no-nonsense locals refer to it as the Slug (also because of its shape.Essentially what you see is simply a cover for the numerous halls and practice rooms - although it can provide for much more than music.

It is as a music centre, however, that it is famed. Apart from its two state of the arts concert halls, it has numerous practice rooms. Its programme of events provides for practically all types of music.

The Sage is set well above the river Tyne and anybody who finds steps difficult shoud not think of approaching it direct from the river. From an upper car park it is fairly easy to reach via a lift and then a ramp.
