You stand in complete awe! Dec 01, 2010
I had no clue of the history, I still dont, but I was in total awe when I visited the ruins of Carthage. I found myself walking around the gardens taking in the surroundings, turned the corner and stood amazed at the views. I spent most of my visit wandering in and out of the ruins placing a gentle hand on all the different surfaces...marble, stone...and looking up at the pillars. Even without the historical background it is an amazing place to visit.

Must See Tourist Spot in Tunis Jul 06, 2010
I don't know why I even have to say that this is a must see tourist attraction because not seeing it if you are in Tunis would be like going to Agra and not seeing the Taj Mahal. The Carthaginian civilization (led by Hannibal) was founded hundreds of years before Christ and became such an economic threat to the region that the Romans took great interest in the place and took it over. The famous story of Hannibal's pre-emptive attack on Italy had him landing his army and doing an envelopment through northern Italy via the Swiss Alps with elephants and all. As most of Tunis was once a sight of Carthage, the ruins are not simply contained on the official museum grounds. It is not uncommon to see ruins in someone's yard miles from central Carthage. As it is a national law that all ruins are property of the state, it is not illegal to leave the ruins on one's property, so many people actually have ruins decorating their property. The level of scientific knowledge in architecture and economy and trade that far back in history is incredible and seeing it in person is awe-inspiring.

Carthage Ruins Sep 09, 2010
The ruins in Carthage were a big disappointment for someone hoping to see the actual city ruins from the Punic era. What is to be seen are the ruins from the Roman era. The museum on the hill overlooking the bay is limited in its Carthagean materials and holds mostly items found after the Romans took over. It seems like the Romans did a good job of erasing the memory, structures and remains of the civilization they destroyed. Worth going there only to say you visited - you won't find much of the original Punic era.
