Brunel, the famous English architect of the time, designed the hotel for the arrival of the railway in Victorian times. The Royal prefix was bestowed upon the hotel as a reminder of Queen Victoria's visit to the city of Bath. The hotel was originally named the Royal Station Hotel and commenced trading in 1846.
