The Rocks Discovery Museum Sydney Reviews
Very Informative Jan 22, 2013
I would definitely recommend this attraction, not only because it is unusual to come across anything free in beautiful Australia, but because it is an informative and heart-felt journey through the life and times of the first settlers in Australia, based in the heart of the first colony.
'The Rocks' is an area of Sydney, beside Circular Quay which it is commonly known as the oldest part of Sydney. When it first began it would have been a series of English-style tenements, three-quarters of it's residents being convicts, shipped over to remote Australia for various different crimes such as theft and forgery. Nowadays it is a beautifully restored series of quaint buildings reminiscent of Europe/early New York. It is a town in the middle of a big city. All of the shops have traditional store fronts and they sell Australian tourist products to food and drinks.
Right in the centre of this provincial part of Sydney is the Rocks Discovery Museum. It is set in one of these old buildings. It's free and you can wander around at your leisure. They have four separate rooms in which they guide you through the history of the settlement, from early Aboriginal times, through the founding of Sydney in the 1790s and modern day information.
They have a multitude of early Aboriginal tools and clothing and a lot of objects from the early years of Sydney.
They also have a nice video running on loop on different themes such as modern day Aboriginal art, rights and voices. Some of the people interviewed say some very moving and emotional things and it's good to watch.
It is a good place to learn about the founding of Sydney, the huge-scale city we see today, from it's very humble beginnings. They did alright for a group of convicts!
