This was my all-time favorite hike, the famous Road to Hana stretches from the central to east coast of the island of Maui in Hawaii, with Hana being the final destination. So we were driving and about halfway there, we passed through an area that was surrounded by bamboo thickets and decided to just pull over and walk through it. We had to look around for a hole to get through first, but when we finally got in it was gorgeous. The canopy stretched at least thirty feet high and cast beautiful shadows on the forest floor. We decided to follow a little dirt path that crept up an incline, through 2-3 waterfalls, and gradually up a large hill. It was so steep I was literally grabbing on to bamboo trunks to pull myself up. When we finally go to the top, it was an amazing view, saw crazy plants I've never seen before, the ocean in the distance, it was an experience you just can't capture on film

This is one of the best hikes you can do. You're lucky to have found it. It's a local favorite. There are 2 hikes like this one, the other is way heavier.

If you'd have kept going, you would have seen more falls, but it gets even more difficult. You have to do some swimming and serious hiking. When the water is really flowing, don't try it. I almost died last year when I was swept over a fall that was over 20 feet high. Scrapes and bruises, but almost lost my marbles.

could 50 miles possibly take any longer? Jul 10, 2008
Hana is a "MUST SEE" on Maui. It is on the far east side of Maui. This is a day trip. Yeah the road getting out there is a pretty much one lane and the windiest road you will ever drive on (takes a few hours to get out there). However, there are some good spots to stop and snap a few gorgeous photos.
