Rough but remote and beautiful Snowdonia Nov 21, 2010
The Rhinogs in southern Snowdonia are not among the best known mountains in the national park. The highest is only about the 50th Welsh mountain. However if you want a day away from any crowds and with some of the best views you can find in Snowdonia, this may be the range for you. be warned however that the walking is rough between Rhinogs Fawr and Fach, where heather growth is prolific. The (slightly higher) southern peaks of Difwys and Y Llethr, even less walked, are easier.

It is worth noting that the Rhinogs do not easily lend themselves to circular walks. The best of the walks I had was with a friend from the Roman Steps beyond Cwm Bychan, over Rhinogs Fach and fawr and on to Diffwys and Y Llethr, dropping down via Moelfre to the A496. This was a long walk and the end was far from the start. We were dependent on driving to the end and leaving a cycle there for my friend to ride back to the start to pick up the car. Clearly two cars would offer something easier.

However the pleasures of the views and of seeing uneroded mountain tops were sufficient consolation for the problems.
