Punchbowl Road, San Remo, Australia
The Punchbowl San Remo Reviews
Rock Fishing For The Brave Jun 26, 2012
A starting point for the popular George Bass Coastal Walk and located at the top of Punchbowl Road San Remo, the Punchbowl can be very rewarding and should always be approached with great caution.
This is a dream spot for die hard fishing fans and offers a variety of fish with snapper, salmon and gummy shark among the most common caught. It has spectacular views of the coastline and the Bass Strait stretches toward Tasmania for as far as the eye can see.
There are two options when fishing at the Punchbowl. Both involve navigating your way down goat tracks and out onto the rock platforms where you can fish.
The track to the left is the easier option and can be navigated with medium difficulty. Once at the bottom you find yourself surrounded by beautiful rock formations and as you walk to the platform you pass the blowhole that reaches deep into the cliff wall. The whole experience is very surreal and the surroundings almost feel alien.
Another feature here is the small sandy beach to the left of the platform. It seems like any other beach and looks very inviting on a hot day but MUST be avoided at all costs as huge undertows lurk beyond the surf and there are no lifeguards to save anyone that gets into strife.
I highly discourage choosing the track to the right as it comes with great risk and is fraught with danger. I have scaled this track once and I definitely won't be doing it again. Personally. I think only a fool would choose this option but if taken it must be approached with extreme caution.
I recommend checking the weather before you leave, danger increases greatly during/after bad weather which in-turn produces large surf. Always watch for rouge waves and never turn your back on the sea when fishing here, especially at high tide.
At the platform there is a lifebuoy braced to the cliff wall and mobile phone reception is strong too so you can always call for help in an emergency.
On a fine, calm day it is a beautiful place to fish, a beautiful place to be and although there are many dangers here I recommend the Punchbowl to those of you who love fishing, who love adventure and those who appreciate our worlds natural beauty.
ps. don't be too greedy, whatever you catch, you have to carry back up the cliff :D
