First lighthouse May 31, 2010
One of the things we had on our list of must see things was the Portland Head Lighthouse. Vance had done a nice job of describing this great site. But we were there early in the morning and the museum and gift shop were still closed. We spent a short time checking out what the first lighthouse looked like and marveled at the rough and rocky shoreline of the east coast. We had also spent some time enjoying the Fort Williams Park and the area around it. Even the drive from Portland over to Cape Elizabeth was nice with the very nice homes along the way. We could definitely see why this is a must see in Portland, Maine.

But we did miss all the kites. Must have been too early.

The Portland Head Light Jun 08, 2008
After reading Vances TravBuddy Review about the Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine, I wanted to see it for myself. An initial intention was to paddle my portable Klepper kayak out to this light but the winds were high and seas too rough. Instead, I approached the picturesque structure by Volkswagen camper.

The Portland Head Light is located on Cape Elizabeth and marks the south side of the Portland Harbor entrance. The day I visited was a fine one for kite flying and dozens flirted the sky while picnickers lounged the grassy grounds of the adjoining Fort Williams Park.

And like Vance suggests, the light makes for awesome pictures. Groomed trails on either side of the lighthouse provide nice backdrops of Maine's rugged shoreline - within easy walking distance. Nearby islands look like a fine place for a future kayak paddle to explore the rugged Atlantic waters of New England .

Thanks Vance!
