Ice skating at "The Pond" at Bryant Park is free. It is the only FREE admission skate park in New York City. If you need to rent skates or a locker, the prices are as follows: Skates $10/pair, Locker $FREE (but a lock will cost you $10 if you don't bring your own), and they have a bag check for $7. Bryant Park is located right behind the New York Public Library, so you can check that out, as well as the nearby stores. "The Pond" is open from mid-October through mid-January. If the weather is nice, there are also small kiosks to get salads and sandwiches, or several restaurants nearby. For more information, check their website or

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. =) You're in the middle of a really gorgeous park that is less touristy than rockefeller center.
