“Great hotel with dreamy pool! Oct 01, 2009
We stayed at The Place for 3 nights while in Mal Pais - we were on a budget and couldn't afford one of the cabanas (we did see them and they were really nice) and had to settle on one of the smaller rooms in the main building. Since business was a little slow they gave us a great rate of only $60 night (including tax). Our room was nicely decorated and probably had one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on in four trips to Costa Rica.

The property has one of the nicest pools I've seen in Costa RIca and there are great and comfortable lounge chairs scattered about. Breakfast was offered for $8/person but we chose to eat elsewhere while we were there. They also offer a laundry service for $10/bag that we used.

Next door is Ritmo Tropical which has some really good Italian Food - so good we ate there twice!

If you're looking for a unique and affordable place to stay, check out The Place. 5 Bungalows, 3 Guest rooms, and 1 Villa (House) to choose from. Prices range from $58 to $258 per night depending on the season and what size room you get. Bungalows range from $98-$108. If you email to check for availability, they may give you a better price. Pay in US$ and it'll be cheaper than the colones price (even when you factor in exchange). Our bungalow had 1 double and 2 single beds. They didn't charge us the extra per person, but we didn't make reservations since it was the rainy season and we didn't know when exactly we would get there, we just called and they had a room available. There are other hotels in the area, but look like they are more expensive and not as unique. Granted we were there in the off season, but the area isn't overly touristy, but there are still things to do there if you like surfing, horseback riding, drinking, etc. Dirt roads. We drove a rented Toyota Corolla, would recommend something bigger with 4 wheel drive, but so long as you buy all the insurance, you should be fine.

Only a few rooms have air conditioning, but seeing as 2 walls of the bungalow open up to get a cross breeze, it's not absolutely necessary during the rainy season. There are ceiling fans and the walls aren't solid, so even if you have the walls/windows closed, there will still be air circulation. There is a pool, small restaurant and bar on site. It appeared to be run by some 20-something Europeans.
