Luxurious, laid back, and affordable hotel May 30, 2014
The hotel is centrally located in the city. The front desk staff are a little stiff but all other employees are very friendly. The hotel is safe and sound. It feels like a staying in a European/Indonesian museum. The room is cozy, clean, and has many cable channels for every language. The food is a little over prices for the quality. The price and decor is well worth the stay. The pool is gorgeous and not crowded in June. The massage is a little pricey and okay. The people in Yogyakarta are very pleasant and will help with anything. The staff goes above and beyond for the guest ( with the exception of the front desk.) It is a must see and a pleasurable stay. I highly recommend it!

Garden and Old Javanese View in Phoenix Hotel Oct 09, 2011
I like the combination among gardens, old Javanese paintings, antique furniture, and the old buildings of this hotel. Once you enter main gate of the hotel lobby, you can feel the nuance of a clean ancient building with traditional style and smile greetings from the staffs.

On the way to the hotel room, you will see beautiful gardens around you. It is a good place to have your breakfast in the garden with a water sound and the green gardens. It is very enjoyable having the breakfast with a warm sun shine.

As the location is in the central of Jogjakarta City and this hotel provides one stop service for linking with several tourist destinations, such as the Jogjakarta Palace, Borobudur, etc,i recommend this hotel for having an easy way to get the complete service.

The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta May 09, 2010
Though the hotel states that it is located near Malioboro, not for a minute think it’s walking distance, you will need to take a cab or the tuk tuk to Malioboro. There are plenty of tuk tuk right in front of the hotel. It is located nearby the Tugu Monument, where you could try the “Kopi Jos”

This is a beautiful colonial style hotel dating back to 1918. Personally the highlight of this hotel is the hotel itself, the rooms and the breakfast did it for me.

We arrived at about 9.45am and no clean room was available therefore we have to wait. Cold tea and towels were served upon check in. We were informed that our room will be ready in an hour so we decided to just hang around the hotel before venturing to explore Yogyakarta. Our room rate came with breakfast but the next day we are leaving the hotel early at 3.30am to drive up to Mount Merapi to catch the sunrise and will not have time for breakfast, so I requested to change our breakfast for the next day to the day we arrive since we still have to wait for our room, might as well kill time having breakfast.

The buffet breakfast was served at the Paprika restaurant overlooking an open courtyard. The spread was wide ranging from local cuisine to International fare with a la minute counters for waffles & pancakes, mee soto and freshly squeeze juices. When we are done with breakfast, we decided to explore around the hotel. We took plenty of pictures since it was raining and there was nothing much we could do. After an hour we went to check if our room is ready but it’s not and they could not give us an estimated time, we requested that they call us once the room is ready but no one followed up. We ended up waiting for 4 hours.

The room is small, cosy and elegantly furnished with Asian meets European décor in mind. There is a small balcony as well; good for ciggie breaks so as not to stink up the room. There is free Wi-Fi as well in room.

The pool area was lovely especially during the night and there is a spa in the hotel located nearby the poolside.

Besides the waiting to check in, we had a pleasant stay.

Colonial dreams of yore Dec 04, 2009
In some way I felt that I should have checked in the hotel wearing a lace kebaya or an empire line dress.

Originally, it was supposed to be the three of us but one of my travel companion had to cancel out during the last minute. The staff did not make a fuss during check-in when I cancelled the extra bed and still honoured me with a complimentary upgrade.

I had no problems with the location as it gave me an excuse to explore the city on a quaint 'becak', which were readily available outside the hotel.

Late night hunger pangs and nowhere to go? Order in. The room service is excellent, food and drink nicely prepared and presented.

The "jamu gendong" offered as part of the breakfast selection and the gamelan playing at the courtyard added a touch of authenticity.

Indeed, authenticity is the allure of romantic travel in Java.

The only minor itsy bitsy issue I had was with the shower which was a bit erratic (hot to cold and hot again) and you couldn't adjust the showerhead.

Truly, it was a wonderful experience staying at the Phoenix and hope to return in the near future.
