The Peninsula Manila - As If Nothing Happened Dec 31, 2007
I did not stay on this hotel by the way. However, I chanced to visit this hotel when I attended a friend's wedding last December 2007.
One has to remember that this hotel has been on the news few months back when some rightist group of soldiers went there decided to use this as their hostage. Article from wikipedia about the "seige": "The Manila Peninsula rebellion occurred on November 29, 2007. Detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, General Lim and other Magdalo officials walked out of their trial and marched through the streets of Makati City, called for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and seized the second floor of The Peninsula Manila along Ayala Avenue. Former Vice-President Teofisto Guingona also joined the march to The Peninsula Manila Hotel as well as some of the soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The siege was ended after the military stormed the building and the occupiers arrested. The lobby of the hotel was obliterated by an armored personnel carrier on the assault to serve Trillanes et al. their arrest warrants." Anyway, during my visit, there was no traced or any remnant of that "rebellion", the entrance that has been destroyed has been replaced with a more beautiful gate. The hotel looks really beautiful now, more beautiful than the last time I visited it few years ago. I would agree that there's added beauty for its "historical" value. Also, it is a must visit place now because of what happened, even if you wont be checking in, just try the food. The buffet is great there. Part of the Manila, Philippines travel blog |
