Mosque Traditional Pottery ! Jan 02, 2012
History :

Monastiraki Square is the hub of life around here and the main street leading off takes one to narrow streets with a thousand artifacts to buy and sell. On one corner of the square is a relic of the Turkish occupation .

The Mosque minus minaret built by the Athenian Moslem, Tsisdarakis in 1759 .

This unique collection comprises a host of decorative and practical pieces including dishes, vases, washbasins, candlesticks, figurines, moneyboxes, jugs, storage jars, and even earthenware musical instruments such as the toubeleki (a kind of oblong drum). It is divided into two sections.

The first is on the ground floor, and consists chiefly of works by renowned artists such as Minas Avramidis and Makarios Vardaxis from Kutahya in Asia Minor, Nikolaos Giasiranis from Rhodes, Nikolaos Theodorou and Dimitris Mygdalinos.

The second section is in the attic which was added to the mosque during its restoration by Anastasios Orlandos in 1915. It encompasses practical ceramics by unknown artists, classified by geographical area so as to highlight local particularities with respect to techniques and use of color.

Hello Andrew !
Thank you for your comment :)
Yes build that under Ottoman dynasty and specially Athens have-had two Mosques ! One is on my review used as museum and the other one couple meters away Fethiye Mosque) , and used under Archaeological society . The government try to build a new mosque but always the orthodox community (96% of population are orthodox) found a problem and block the erection :) Greece is a fanatic Christian community with close religion mind and no respect to the others :) Big story without end :)
Other towns in Greece and special to the north have many mosques :)

The mosque was built when Greece was under Ottoman dominion, I believe? Are there other mosques to note in Athens?
