The Odeon in the Printworks
The Odeon in the Printworks Manchester Reviews
The odeon Feb 24, 2010
Why am I reviewing a cinema? They have odeons everywhere, right?
Well, the main reason is that it rains a LOT in Manchester, and I know not all of you are as obsessed with art galleries and shopping as I am. There you are, planning a trip to the peak District, or flying in for a conference, and the deluge starts - what are you to do?
Well, the odeon in the Printworks has two special features that will make a stop over whilst the sky clears worthwhile. The first is a 3d IMax screen, with the new technology. I was reluctant - I had seen a 3d imax film on the old technology in, of all places, a furniture store in Framingham MA. On the old technology, it was just a gimmick to make you duck, with no real films. The new films, however, are real Hollywood features and it is pretty cool to watch them in 3D on a screen the size of a medium size block of flats. Eight stories high, with things flying at you, loosely attached to a plot. Ladies - Johnny Depp, 8 stories high. Smirk.
If you don't want to watch an 8 story high Johnny Depp, then the other attraction that is different from most cinemas is the Gallery. The Gallery costs a little extra, but you get all you can drink soft drinks, all you can eat popcorn, and there is a bar. it isn't included in the price, unfortunately. But a cinema with extra comfortable seats (which are arranged so that you can pull the armrest up between each pair) and a little bar to meet in, away from most of the students and teenagers, strikes me as about the most perfect place for a first date there could be.
All in all, a great place to go when it rains.
