Other than by daring sea captain in summer or dog sled in winter, the only transport into Nome is by air. Coming into town from the airport, the first building - painted red with yellow trim- that stands out as you turn onto Front Street is the Nugget Inn. With a backdrop of the gray waters of the Bering Sea, the Nugget's décor, indoor and out, boldly reflects Nome's booming gold rush years dating from the late 1800s. Its atmosphere is truly Alaskan.

The Nugget Inn is my top choice for a place to stay in Nome after staying here last summer for a night. My room was basic but very clean and comfortable. Most are furnished with a refrigerator and a microwave. The kind and friendly owners manage the place and work extra hard at ensuring guests a pleasant, restful stay. Alcohol is not permitted in the rooms which helps ensure quiet nights. Rates at the Nugget Inn are very reasonable - among the lowest in Nome.

The two-story hotel operates year round. During the summer months of July and August - and during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March - reservations are a must. Each March, the finish-line for the Iditarod is positioned right in front of the Nugget. Unfortunately the Nugget Inn is filled up on this trip.
