The Northern Central Railroad Trail Monkton Reviews
Hike, Bike, Fish, Tube...the NCR Trail has it all! Apr 03, 2010
If you're looking for a great place to take a walk or ride your bike this is it! The trail starts in Ashland, MD and runs all the way to the PA state line. It continues it Pennsylvania but is obviously maintained by different people. In most areas the trail is 10 feet wide and is made up of a mixture of stone, dirt, and dust. It's a comfortable surface to run on and the trees of the forest provide great shade from the summer sun. Throughout the trail you will find great access points to the Gunpowder River which is widely used for recreation. You'll see people fishing from bridges and river banks as well as high school kids and families taking a break while they tube down the river. Watch your step...horseback riders use the trail also, though not nearly as often as pedestrians. There are several stops along the trail to park and a major facility at the Monkton Station. You'll find a place to rent inner tubes, look at trail maps, use the restroom, and grab an ice cream cone at the small cafe!
I remember going to this trail as a child for a long school bike ride. There are mile markers along the trail so you can keep track of where you started and how far you travel. When crossing roadways they suggest you walk your bike across as some of the roads twist and turn and carry enough traffic to concern. I always find that drivers are friendly and considerate of these cross ways.
