Interesting Stop in Jakarta Mar 05, 2015
The Museum Nasional is located in jakarta and holds a nice collection of antiquities from ancient times to fairly modern times. Everything of interest seems to be in the museum from ancient artifacts to materials from the Japanese occupation of World War II. Dioramas, carved objects, gold items and things from the colonial ears are spread over several floors of this nice fairly modern building. For those of us who have issues with climbing stairs, there is a conveniently located elevator. Several objects of interest include items from China and the surrounding area which were brought to the country as trade goods. A relaxing few hours at most for those who are interested in items from this area.

he National Museum of Indonesia Aug 07, 2011
The Museum Nasional Indonesia in Jakarta, also known among the Indonesian as “Gedung Gajah” and “Elephant Building”, officially opened to the public in 1868. The reason many know it as the elephant building is because of the bronze elephant statue in front that was donated by the King of Thailand in 1871.

There are around 140,000 pieces in the museum, which consist of prehistoric, archaeology, ceramic, numismatic, history, ethnography, and geography collections. Most of the collections were collected during the colonial period through the military and scientific expeditions. The museum has two parts: the old building and the new wing. The new wing has four floors with a different theme on each floor. The first floor is nature and environment; the second floor is economics and trade; the third floor is social organization; and the fourth floor is the ceramics and regalia/gold objects.

Having done research into prehistoric man and fossils that have been unearthed, one of the most fascinating parts of the museum for me was their collection of famous skeletons found in Indonesia, including the Hobbit and Flores man.

With so many things to see, plan on spending at least a half day here. But if you really want to see and read everything, you might have to spend several days here. This is definitely a museum worth your visit while in Jakarta. It costs foreigners 1USD and locals .50 cents for admission; they could charge a lot more and it would still be worth it!
