The Monkey House Lagos Reviews

cheap backpackers hostel in Lagos, Portugal Jan 19, 2009
In the centre of happening Lagos you can find the Monkey House, a real backpackers party hostel. Partying is the main reason to come to Lagos anyway so if you’re looking for long quiet nights there are better places just out of town.

If you are here to party however, few places will be as good to stay in as the Monkey House.

It’s at most a few minutes walk from all the great bars around as well as the little shopping streets.

Also within walking distance are beautiful sandy beaches with dramatic rock formations surrounding them. Great surf spots are short drives away.

It’s not a very big hostel with a capacity of 28 beds.

The only thing that’s on the ground floor is reception which stays open 24 hours. At the back of the small corridor are the stairs leading to the second floor where the rooms are.

These are not very big but are large enough, with each bed having it’s own wooden locker.

Each room has a washbasin and mirror with sockets for electric razors.

The beds are made of metal and can be very noisy.

At the back of the building there’s the common room with cosy couches and a large screen TV. They have an extensive DVD collection and several board games to choose from.

Right in the centre of the room is an old iron woodstove but that’s only needed for a short time of the year.

There are also two computers for free internet access but they don’t always function properly because of a lack of software updates.

Outside of the common room there’s the roof terrace with lounge chairs and a large barbeque set perfect for a lazy dinner before heading out to the bars.

Here Rafiki the cat submits to the petting by the guests.

Toilet facilities are basic but clean. The showers sometimes have slightly clogged drains but are otherwise in good state.

The staff are travellers too and can often also be found in sister bar Three Monkeys (see separate review).

Right next door is the One Fat Monkey Diner with food a good prices but it was closed when I was there so no review of that.

Organised excursions can be booked during high season.

Practical:

-24h reception so no curfew

-English speaking staff

-rooms of 4 or 6 beds for € 10,00 per bed/night

-laundry can be done by the staff for € 5,00 per normal load

-WiFi in all bedrooms and the common room

-mountain bike hire available
