The Matterhorn, the mountain of mountains. Zermatt Reviews
The Matterhorn, the mountain of mountains. Jul 21, 2015
The mountain of mountains - der berg der berge as the german speaking world aptly calls a mountain, rising steeply like a sentinel in a pyramidal form above the mattertal (matter valley) and the town of zermatt and with a height of 4478 meters or almost 14,700 feet, it is one of the highest peaks in the alpine system, ranking at number 7th.
the matterhorn got its name from coining the words: matter (the name of the valley) and the horn because of its shape but in other languages like italian - its named monte cervino and in french - mont cervin.
although the matterhorn is not my favorite mountain in the alps, i couldnt deny that i am attracted to its beauty, in my opinion, it is the most beautiful mountain in all of the alpine put together that i had ever seen. because of it's isolation from the rest of the valais alps, the striking shape catches the eyes so easily and marvel at its spectacle. the four faces of the matterhorn as it said faces nearly the 4 compass points so that adds to the attraction aside from its beauty.
the matterhorn belong to the old school mountains, one of the birthplace of mountaineering and climbing. so its is a privelege for me to see it at last withouth clouds covering it and finally after 4 years, completing my the list of the 10 highest summits in the alps.
it is also very difficult to see the matterhorn, even if its sunny in zermatt, banner clouds form at the back of the mountain and slowy envelopes the peak as its an isolated high peak - it creates a weather of it's own. so anyone could see all the mountains surrounding zermatt except for the matterhorn. the trick is, the best way to see it, is to spend days in zermatt (some get lucky and see it the first time). the matterhorn and the weather are at clearest early in the morning and late at night.
there are many mountain trains / cable cars to take day hikers to the trail heads or even for the photo enthusiast. the tips from me are:
sunnegga paradise - the best shape of the matterhorn is to be seen here.
trockener steg - the east face of the matterhorn towering over theodul glacier lake.
rotenboden - small walk to riffelsee lake that mirrors the east face of the matterhorn.
blauherd / rothorn - requires hiking to see grindjisee and stellisee lakes that mirrors the most beautiful side of the matterhorn.
the cable cars and mountain trains, accomodation and food in zermatt are very expensive. if you could only afford one cable car / mountain train ride - i suggest the blauherd and rothorn trail as the high peaks of the valais alps and the alps in general are at their most striking form.
if you want a hike - thats different from the others - i strongly recommend the matterhorn glacier trail. the trail follows the tongues of the upper theodul and furgg glaciers that eventually leads under the east face of the matterhorn. the landscape is just spectacular there, rocks, ice and only the jagged peaks of the valais alps could be seen in the horizon.
