A Wildlife Refuge With Wildlife Feb 20, 2009
Located in eastern North Carolina in Hyde County, the Lake Mattamuskeet refuge was established in 1934 and covers 50,180 acres of water, wetlands and timberlands.

Lake Matamuskeet, the largest natural lake in North Carolina, is shallow, averaging only two feet in depth. It is 18 miles long, 5 to 6 miles wide and covers about 40,000 acres.

Mattamuskeet is in the middle of the Atlantic Flyway and provides a valuable wintering area for waterfowl. Canada geese, snow geese, tundra swans and 22 species of ducks winter on the refuge.

Refuge staff offer guided wildlife tours each year during the Swan Days Festival, held the first weekend in December.

The refuge permits boating and sport fishing is permitted on Lake Mattamuskeet and adjacent canals from March 1 through November 1. It is report that fishing for bass, catfish and bream is excellent in the canals and along the lake shore in spring and fall. I have seen herring dipping and blue crab fishing out of the water control structures. The refuge permits herring dipping from March 1 to May 15 and crab fishing is permitted year-round out of the water control structures. All fishing activities are state regulated. The refuge permits bow fishing for carp during the fishing season.
