The Mariners' Museum Newport News Reviews
Maritime history at the Mariners' Museum Sep 22, 2009
The Mariners' Museum in Newport News is one of largest museums of seafaring. Themed galleries are the Age of Exploration, Age of Steam, Defending the Seas, the Small Craft Center, and the Chesapeake Bay.
Much of the story of seafaring is told through beautifully crafted ship models, like a Phoenician galley or a Korean Turtle Ship, along with collections of paintings, carvings, and artifacts. There are a few full size vessels on display, especially in the Small Craft Center and the Chesapeake Bay gallery.
The Mariners' Museum has a large collection of wooden figureheads from sailing ships. The figureheads, beautifully crafted works of art, are displayed throughout the museum.
A new addition to the Mariners' Museum is the USS Monitor Center. The very extensive exhibit, including a full-scale replica of the warship, tells the story of the development and recovery and preservation of the US Navy's 1862 ironclad USS Monitor. Displays tell of the ship's role in the Civil War and influence on subsequent warship design. The rival ironclad CSS Virginia, Monitor's opponent in the Battle of Hampton Roads (March 8-9, 1862), is also described.
