Behind the scenes at the Walt Disney World Railroad Apr 17, 2003
The Magic Behind Our Steam Trains is a Backstage Tour offered at Walt Disney World. On the tour, participants learn about the operation of the Walt Disney World Railroad at Magic Kingdom. The major highlight of the tour is the opportunity to see the train shed and maintenance area where the steam locomotives and rolling stock are maintained.

The tour meets at Magic Kingdom before the park opens. You have an opportunity for special photos angles and learn about Walt Disney and trains. His first job was as a train newsboy and his uncle was an locomotive engineer. Mickey Mouse was first drawn on a train and Walt Disney liked trains himself. You then go behind the scenes as the park's trains are prepped for their daily operation. The four steam locomotives are all real, not reproductions. They were built in the USA in the early 20th century, purchased in Mexico in the 1960s, and then shipped to Florida for restoration. There is all sorts of trivia to learn. Spare parts and scrap were also purchased in Mexico and strewn about the right-of-way to give a steam-era feel to the train ride.

A must for railfans, railway enthusiasts, and anyone who likes trains!

Update 2011: Current price is $49 plus park admission. Call for reservations.
