The Luz church Chennai Reviews
Heritage older than the St.Pauls at Melaka May 04, 2013
Chennai is the city, Mylapore the area and Luz church road, at Luz, is the spot where this Church called the Kattu koil(forest Church)stands.History reveals that a group of Friars from Portugal who had come to Cochin, sailed further and getting lost in the sea prayed to Mary for help.A light guided them to the shore and further up through a forest to a mound. It was in thanksgiving that the church came to be built by them upon the spot in 1516 and has stood the test of time till today.
It was called the Nossa Senhora da Luz or the church of the lady of light. The church is well maintained but construction all around has destroyed the forest. The church is small, built in Gothic style with an elaborately carved altar of vines colored in gold and silver,a belfry, wooden terrace for the choir and a barrel vaulted roof ceiling with fresco adds to the beauty of the church as it stands witness to the Medieval European art and architecture.Portuguese families that lived around the church have buried their dead within and around the church.
Damaged by the Golconda kingdom in the 16Th century,by the Hyder Ali in the 17Th century and occupied by the British in the 18Th century the church has yet not lost its name or fame till today.
The Church has been the back drop for several Films of famous Tamil stars in recent years shearly on the strength of its ornate beauty.
The church is not in the regular tour as there are several huge churches of the 18Th century in the map of Chennai or Madras. The Church is just two Km away from the Santhome Basilica where the apostle St.Thomas was said to have been buried. The LUZ Church is one among the very few heritage buildings around and certainly one belonging to the 15Th century proudly proclaiming the renaissance of Medieval Europe which definitely needs a visit.
Saying so I was told that a film shoot was in progress and so being lucky on this the 3rd day of May 2013 I did some clicking of the shooting in progress.
The church of the same design as the St. Pauls Church at Melaka,Malaysia is older than it by several centuries and has been declared a heritage building only recently.
