The Living Nativity Central Reviews
Central California's premier outdoor Christmas production Dec 26, 2013
The Living Nativity is a church-sponsored event in Riverdale, CA. Riverdale is a small farming and dairy town in Central Valley California. The idea of live nativity sprung out from a sincere desire to give back to the community on Christmas season. In the process of brainstorming, the people of AOG (church organization)decided to facilitate a live dramatization of the Nativity Scene. So the former presentation which was only done in a Sunday School classroom, it has now become one of the Central Valley's most adored annual outdoor Christmas productions. This is a drive-thru Christmas event, so while inside the comfort of your car you are delightfully entertained by an inspiring reenactment of six scenes depicting the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. And because it is a drive-thru event, expect a slow moving of cars but don’t get pissed because that’s the fascinating thing about it! Yet even though the traffic flow was really slow, it was handled well and each car was given enough time for the passengers to watch each scene. While we drove through we listened to the Choir sang at the “manger scene” which was aired through a local radio station.
The Living Nativity in Riverdale makes it real by casting over 200 members of the community in all ages – young and old who wore in clothing worn during Biblical times. Live animals like donkeys, sheep, , camels and horses are also part of the living nativity props. The participants of nativities include angels, shepherds, wise men, Caesar, Mary, Joseph and the manger with a baby Jesus.
The sets are very colorful too; it brings the Nativity to life! The main street of the little town of Bethlehem is bustling with travelers, merchants and of course Joseph and Mary seeking room at the inn. Of all the six reenactments, the market scene is my favorite! This is the scene where Joseph asked the inn keeper for a room but there was none so they were directed to the stable or barn. The sights, sounds and smell of fresh baked bread and candle made me feel like I was transported in another time and place! A “seller” with a basket full of bread even came to our car and handed fresh baked breads to us, which we gamely accepted of course! The angel who appeared to the shepherds is also a hit among the other scenes because she was suspended on cables and people have to crane their necks to look up into the sky to see her and because it is dark you would think she is really flying!
Admission is free but since this is not funded by the county, donations are appreciated. The Living Nativity starts every 22nd of December and ends on the 25th, the same four nights every year, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM and will NOT be canceled due to rain or fog. The venue is on the corner of Marks and Mt. Whitney Avenues in Riverdale, California.
My photos are not that sharp since I only used my phone to take pictures so it might not attract as much but the Living Nativity is truly worth it visiting! Visitors from all over "followed" the star in the sky to check out this quite unique production!
