The Leaningest Water Tower in Texas May 12, 2008
One of the most photographed things along the entire stretch of old Route 66, which is now Highway 40 is this old water tower just at the edge of Groom, Texas. This old water tower had been slated for demolition when a large rancher and farmer by the last name of Britten bought it and had it put up just off the north side of the highway as a tourist attraction and place for people to stop and ask questions about it. At the time it was erected, at about a 10% lean he also had a truck stop and restaurant there, which has since closed. And because it is not filled with water, it will stay as it was put up, leaning heavily to one side. The only thing it is used for now is for Christmas, when a large star is lit on the top. But according to Route 66 afficianados it is still the most photographed thing along the entire route!
