Strange graveyard! May 02, 2011
One of the more peculiar sights on our two week journey around the island, and which also was marked out in Lonely Planet as a point of interest; was the Lacovia Tombstones.
The tombstones are situated on a site of a Texaco gas station at a crossing in the city of Lacovia. When you drive around in Jamaica you see loads of houses that have their own graveyard in the garden but this one is situated at a gas station; something that I never had seen before!
A legend tells that two young men had a duel outside a Tavern here in 1723 and killed each other; in Lone Planet it is marked as an unlikely legend and they also mention 1738 as the data. The Rough Guide states that there has been scientific excavations stating that one of the deceased should be identified as Thomas Jordan Spencer and that the coat of arms on his tombstone suggests a connection with the family of Winston Churchill and Lady Diana Spencer.
Anyway – it is pretty peculiar.
