A small colourful crater Jan 09, 2011
Not far from Skálholt we stopped at a place called Kerio which turned out to be what volcanologists used to class as an explosion crater. The crater was formed around 6.500 years ago and is the northern end of a row of craters known as Tjarnarhölar.

The crater is oval and about 270 meters long, 170 meters wide and 55 meters deep. The water depth is between 7 and 14 meters. A crater like this is formed in explosive eruptions, but volcanologists have not been able to find any ash deposits that could be traced to an explosion from Kerio, so the conclusion has changes to that Kerio is a scoria crater which means that the volcano feel into itself after having erupted.

The current water level is a mirror of the level of ground water in the area and according to an old tradition the water level is corresponding the water level on Bürfell in Grimsnes and vice versa.
