Excellent value, great Venue Dec 21, 2010
This center has a great introduction to Kathikali dance, as well as live Indian music every night of the week between 8pm and 9pm for roughly 150Rs. I also had the opportunity to see a visiting troupe preforming Barat Natyam dance - a great intimate venue where you get an excellent view of the stage and whatever is happening upon it. Great location close to the tourist center of Fort Cochin.

Traditional art form of Kerala Sep 22, 2008
Kathakali dancing dates back to the 16th century and traditionally, this art form took place in temple grounds. The dancers wear huge, colourful costumes and heaps of make-up, their dancing mainly consist of hand gestures and facial expressions. There dances are usually based on Hindu epics such as the Ramayana.

No visit to Kerala, or Kochi, is complete without visiting a performance of Kathakali dancing, and the Kerala Kathakali Centre is a perfect spot to see it.

First the actors come on stage to put on their many layers of complicated make-up, you can watch and take as many pictures as you like. Then, one of the dancers explains the most important facial expressions and hand gestures. Before the actual performance begins, a print with the story that is being played is handed out (also in English), so it’s impossible to not understand the performance.

It’s stunning to watch and anyone holding a camera will go wild!
