Keei Cafe was a review I had read and wanted to try this unique restaurant. We found the restaurant in a square building in the back along the highway. It has been in existance for 13 years. The current owner and his wife have owned it for 6 years. Our waiter, Greg, was a high school friend of the owner and he and his wife manage it when the owners are off. The kitchen chef and pantry staff all all relatives.

The kitchen tries to us locally grown lettuce and produce. They grow their own herbs. Whenever possible they use local beef & greens. The fishermen stop by and sell them local fish. They try to use it within 2 days.

For starters we had coconut shrimp rice cakes. The shrimp were tiny bits in a firm rice cake that appeared to be fried. It was good. We got two cakes for $7.95.

Valerie order scallop and shrimp salad. She liked it but felt it had very few shrimp for the $11.95 charge. It was big on lettuce but that should have been at the bottom...

David ordered the Fresh catch with salad. It cost $21.95. He got feta on the salad so it was basically my $7.95 Greek salad with two small pieces of fish. disappointing. He regretted his order and wished he had just ordered a greek salad with fish and it would have topped out to about 14.00 or so....luck of the pick there...

I ordered the Spicy Fajitas. I anticipated the different plates and I would put together the fajita... instead it was put together for me. It had a tiny bit of Fajita sauce/beans with a few chunks of chicken (which were good) and lots of lettuce on top. I think they had to put the lettuce to disguise how skimpy the fajita part was. I ordered a Greek Salad that was excellent. We each got a drink and the total was $81.98.

Although the ambiance was nice we felt the food was not above average. It was barely average because of the lack of portion and overuse of lettuce to fluff the portion size. We may have made poor choices on the menu but sometimes it is hard to tell how it will be presented.

I am glad we tried it but it will not be one of our top rated restaurants.

This food is the epitomy of exotic Hawaiian fusion cusine. From such gourmet entrees as Fresh ahi grilled in a lemon caper butter sauce, with garlic mashed potatoes, carmelized onions and sauteed vegetables, to Ono in a tangerine curry sauce with rice... this restaurant has daily special that blow your mind. Salads with locally grown fresh veggies and citrus vinegarettes, lilikoi ice teas, and portions that will fill you up, the Keei Cafe is the toast of the South Kona area.
