Japanese Yen is an international trading currency Mar 06, 2009
When I visited japan for the first time, I was not aware of what their currency was worth or how valuable in the international trading places. I found out soon enough that it competed with the US dollar and Euro. The yen is the Japanese legal tender. There are four kinds of bills (10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, 2,000 yen 1,000 yen) and six kinds of coins (500 yen, 100 yen, 50 yen, 10 yen, 5 yen, 1 yen) used.

When visiting Japan you will need to actually convert whatever currency you have into Yen to make it easier for you to buy things within the country. Foreign exchange through the banks is cheaper (well even outside the bank) but do not exhange before entering the country as it will cost you more in exchange than it should. Save a dollar ot two by changing once you arrive into the country.
